Time for the First Female U.N. Secretary-General?


Since the United Nations (U.N.) was founded 70 years ago, there has never been a female secretary-general. However, the “glass ceiling,” which is metaphor for a barrier in women’s career advancement, may be broken.

In 1995 at the U.N.’s Fourth World Conference on Women, 189 state representatives set a goal to achieve gender equality by 2000. However, many qualified female candidates have not been given fair chances to be considered for global decision-making positions. A U.N. ambassador from Colombia, Maria Emma Mejia, started a campaign, saying “the time has come for a woman to hold the highest position.”

So far, 42 member states have officially signed up to support the idea of electing a woman as the next U.N. Secretary-General. Ban Ki-moon, the current Secretary-General, has mentioned several times that it is “high time” for a female secretary-general. It will be interesting to hear the final decision of the U.N. permanent council members ? China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States ? at the end of 2016.

유엔이 70년 전 설립된 이후로, 한 번도 여성 사무총장이 나온 적이 없었습니다. 그러나 여성의 승진을 막는 장벽이라는 비유인 "유리 천장"이 깨질 수도 있을 것 같습니다. 1995년 제4회 세계 여성 회의에서 189개국 대표들은 2000년까지 양성평등을 이루자는 목표를 세웠습니다. 그러나, 자격을 갖춘 많은 여성 후보자들이 세계적 결정권을 가질 수 있는 자리에 뽑힐 수 있는 공정한 기회를 얻지 못했습니다. 콜롬비아의 유엔 대사인 Maria Emma Mejia는 "여성이 최고의 지위를 얻을 때가 되었다" 라고 말하며 캠페인을 시작했습니다. 여태까지 42개의 유엔 회원국이 공식적으로 여성을 차기 유엔 사무총장으로 선출하는 것을 지지하기 위해 공식적으로 서명에 참가했습니다. 반기문 현 유엔 사무총장은 그간 몇 번 여성 사무총장이 선출될 "유력한 시기"이다 라고 언급해왔습니다. 2006년 말에 유엔 상임 이사국인 중국, 프랑스, 러시아, 영국, 그리고 미국의 최종 결정을 듣는 것은 흥미로운 일이 될 것입니다.
